Best Practice Guide for Riders
PART 1: RIDES ON WHICH PARTICIPANTS PRE-BOOK (Monday Rides & E-bikes)
Disclaimer
- Each rider is responsible for their own safety.
- The MCG has no responsibilty for injury, accident, loss or damage to riders or equipment.
- By choosing to take part in the advertised ride, riders are confirming they are fit enough to do so and their cycle is safe, legal and roadworthy.
- Riders should comply with the Highway Code and the Countryside Code.
- It is recommended that individuals hold their own insurance when cycling with the MCG. Insurance is available at a discounted rate through Cycling UK under MCG affiliation, or through an insurer of your choice.
Before the ride
- Book a place with the ride leader, and only turn up if the booking is confirmed.
- Inform the ride leader if unable to attend and/or need to cancel a meal.
- Contact the ride leader if in doubt about the suitability of the ride [see Green, Blue and Red grading on the Calendar page of the website, and about any health problems you have.
- Check the MCG website for the cancellation of the ride, especially after a weather warning.
- Provide the ride leader with an emergency contact [ICE] if requested. This information will be destroyed at the end of the ride.
- Wear a helmet and suitable clothing. Bring a spare inner tube, lights and tools.
- Bring a drink and a snack.
During the ride
- Ride with all due regard to the group and other road/trail users.
- If you have a problem during the ride, tell the leader or back-up.
- Do not overtake the ride leader unless asked to do so.
- Close all gates you pass through.
- Ensure you leave enough space from the riders in front of you.
- Give way to pedestrians and stop if necessary and shout a warning.
- Ensure that riders know when you are overtaking, and only do so on the right.
- Ride in separated groups of 3 or 4 to allow vehicles to overtake more safely on busy roads.
- Use and pass on shouts of "stopping", "car up" [front], "car back" [behind] and "hole in road/trail".
- Stay aware of potential hazards within the group and further ahead.
